Senate Internship

For the past four weeks, I (T.J.) have had the privilege of interning for Kansas Senator Dennis Pyle in Topeka. Wednesday (2/16) was my third day as an intern which means I have finally been able to figure out where things are in the Capital building.

While I have not often been in the Senate Chamber, I was able to attend once and discreetly take a picture (hence the poor quality). You may note that the chamber is very ornate. Years ago the Senate and House competed against each other for the most decorative chamber. The Senate won! :)

So far, a typical day consists of arriving in Topeka by 8:30 in order to attend the Commerce Committee meeting. Immediately after at 9:30, I sit in for the Judiciary Committee meeting. The rest of the day I do research, write updates to possibly use for the Pyle newsletter, usually attend at least one other committee meeting, assist with pages, and do anything else that comes up. To this point, I have learned quite a bit and definitely have more to learn!

At the end of the day, Sen. Pyle usually endeavors to talk to me for a bit -- that is the best part of the day! Then, I start the over an hour drive home.
