Successful Hunters

Today we finally got a deer. Dad and I entered the woods about 2:30pm. While I was stationed on one side of a stand of firs, Dad walked around to the other side of the firs to try to drive any deer out. I had been at my positions for 10 to 15 minutes when I caught a glimpse of Dad through the trees.

Suddenly from behind Dad two does rushed through the woods. Dad fired 2 shots as the does rushed by him at about 15 yards. Both deer kept running straight for my position and out of Dad's sight.

I fired twice at the back doe who swerved off to the side. Then I shot twice at the other doe as it ran by me at about 10 yards. My rifle jammed! Just before going over the rise behind me the doe paused. I rapidly shook my rifle until the jam cleared -- making tons of noise. Turning I fired at the doe, immediately dropping her.

I re-cocked and turned toward the other doe which had stopped in the valley below me. I pulled the trigger...click. Nothing! I had accidentally ejected an unused bullet trying to clear the jam. Unfortunately, I couldn't insert more bullets into my rifle in time to shoot again. She escaped up the hill.

We are happy that we got at least one deer this year, but Dad and I are heading out to the woods tomorrow morning to see what else we can get.
